Yunus Portrait Unveiled at Glasgow

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, who has just turned 76, addressed members of the prestigious Royal Society of Edinburgh. Royal Society of Edinburgh is a prestigious society of top academics of Scotland established in 1783. The society members or fellows, of which there are currently around 1600, includes academics from a wide range of disciplines - science & technology, arts, humanities, social science, business and public service. Professor Yunus delivered his speech to a packed audience where he highlighted the challenges, societies across the world, are facing due to wealth concentration and poverty. He talked about solutions to these challenges through social business and how it is being adopted in different countries including Bangladesh.
On 28th June, 2016 Professor Yunus delivered the convocation speech for the new graduates of Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). Convocation ceremony continued for two days. Professor Yunus is the chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University(GCU) for the last five years. During the ceremony he shook hands with each of the 2,500 students who received their degrees graduating from the School for Business and Society; School of Engineering and Built Environment, and the School of Health and Life Sciences, and other faculties. GCU has set up Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health and one of the students graduated in social business this year. GCU also created Yunus Chair on social business and health.There are also Chancellor Yunus scholarships offered by GCU. GCU has established Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing in Bangladesh in collaboration with Grameen Healthcare Trust as a social business venture to address the acute shortage of quality nursing education in Bangladesh.
An elaborate unveiling ceremony of a portrait of Chancellor Yunus took place at the university on 29th June 2016. The portrait was commissioned by GCU and painted by celebrated Scottish painter Gerard Burns. Born in 1961 Mr Burns was the Principal of Art at St. Aloysius College of Glasgow. He later left his position to become independent painter and now is considered as the leading portrait painter in the country. The portrait will be placed at the entrance of the newly built main building of the university.
Chancellor Yunus' 76th birthday was celebrated by the university with birthday cake and songs.
